I woke up this morning and decided to do a one day fast. It wasn’t planned. I had made a lunch to bring to work and everything. My body actually decided for me. It told me, “no–not hungry now and not going to be hungry for A WHILE. There’s just no room in here and we need to catch up” (we being the cells, I think). Whenever I feel this way I take the hint and just go with it. I definitely feel like it was the right decision too because it’s a little after 4pm now and I still don’t feel hungry. I actually feel very awake, alert, and energized–it’s awesome.  I know I’m going to make it until tomorrow morning too because I have already planned out all of the things I want to do with my time this evening and am really looking forward to some “me time.”

I used to do these one day fasts once a week for a quite while but then my body just kind of “told me” to back off. Maybe I don’t need to cleanse so regularly now that I’ve been vegan for over 2 years and raw for over 1 year? Not sure. But I do know that it’s best not to make yourself cleanse when your body says no. This may sound intuitive but there have been times when I’ve wanted to fast for a day because I hadn’t done so in a while, or because I needed to get A LOT done that day, or because it was a full moon or new moon, etc and it just DID NOT work. In fact, it totally backfired on me and ended up feeling like crap because I didn’t follow through on my intent.

Where is this going? With a new season now in gear, it is a perfect time, one of the best times really, to do some sort of a cleanse. If and when you decide to do one, trust your body and what it tells you! Listen to it and be kind to it and don’t heal yourself by torturing yourself. There are so many different types of cleanses out there (all for different levels of toxicity) it can be overwhelming really. If experienced, there are several month long programs that Blessed Herbs, Ejuva, and Karyn Calabrese offers. There is also the Jubb’s 14 day nutritional fast which I am very fond off (prescribed in the back of their Lifefood Recipe book), which involve a liver and gall bladder flush. And if you’re just starting out, there are all sorts of simpler options for you such as 1-3 day juice fast, a colonic, or a 10 day Master Cleanse fast. It’s all good and wonderful and I’m sure your body will appreciate any love you express to in the form of detoxing.

Happy Cleansing,

~Lenette
