Northside Chicago Grocery Stores and Tips
Stanley’s Fruits & Vegetables–1558 N. Elston Ave., Chicago. Has a great selection of organic and non-organic produce here (on the left hand side of the store. Go Thursday-Sunday for the freshest food. Some of the food may need to be consumed quickly as it may be found already very ripe.
Favorites here (all organic): Kale, Parsley, Collard Greens, Dandelion Greens, Watercress, basil, mint, kiwis, bell peppers, celery, berries, apples.
Okay to buy non-organic: zucchini, cabbage, broccoli, oranges, bananas, blueberries.
Trader Joe’s –1840 N Clybourn Ave, Chicago. Good for staples like organic nuts and dried fruits, organic wine, 100% juices if you like juices. I wouldn’t buy their supplements.
Whole Foods -1000 W North Ave, Chicago. (The Whole Foods on Ashland and School has a far better bulk isle than the one on North and Sheffield but is a lot smaller. 3300 N Ashland Ave, Chicago) Get the exotic foods you don’t find in other grocery stores (sea vegetables, aloe vera leaves, burdock root, spices, etc.) Body and makeup products are a safe bet here. You can always return non-foods if you don’t like something.
Note: there are MANY other Whole Foods in Chicago. The above two are just the ones that I go to.
Life Spring Foods-1463 W Webster Ave and 3178 N Clark St, Chicago. The Clark store has a much larger selection and has E3 Live. There is only metered parking though and it’s a bit hard to find it. The Webster store has a parking lot that is free with validated purchase. Great for supplements and certain foods. They stock David Wolfe’s line. Supplements are usually 10%+ off of the suggested retail price.
Karyn’s Fresh Corner- 1901 North Halsted Street, Chicago. Stop by for a special treat for yourself (kale chips, raw ice cream, etc). Try writing down the ingredients of your favorite foods/snacks and making them yourself!
Golden Pacific-5353 North Broadway at Belmoral. Get your young coconuts and frozen Durian here. Get at least 6-8 coconuts to last you two weeks or so so you can minimize trips here. One case of 9 is usually $10.50. Also find exotic fruits (though frozen) to try out like Mangosteen, Jackfruit, and Custard Apple.
Costco- 2746 N Clybourn Ave, Chicago. Find the best avocadoes in Chicago here, huge tubs of organic spinach, big bags or organic baby carrots, and regular broccoli florettes. Medjool dates, raw almonds, walnuts, and pinenuts (although not organic), are a great buy here too. I go here every 1-2 weeks. A membership card is usually well worth it, especially if split between you and a friend (each membership is $50/year for up to two cards).
And a bit farther north…
New Leaf Natural Grocer 1261 W. Loyola Ave (Edgewater or Evanston). This place has a ton of raw grocery and superfood items as well as a small produce section (GREAT prices on burdock root here!). They also have a nice bulk section. Bonus: You can get a weekly box of organic seasonal fruits and veggies from $15-33/week, depending on the box size. I was there when they were assembling the boxes and the produce looked great!
True Nature Health Foods 6034 N. Broadway St. (Edgewater). They have a juice bar and a non-raw soup and sandwich delis. Juice prices are pretty reasonable. I like their dry grocery and supplement selection. They also had a small produce selection but the prices were sky high and the avocados were about 5 days past ripe. Bonus: this place is also home to Edgewater’s recycling center, and they have a co-op program with Kings Hill Farm that you could join for a weekly or yearly fee.
The Green Grocer 1402 W. Grand Ave. This is a brand new little grocery store specializing in organics. I just visited it on 4/19. It was very cute!! The owners are supernice and have some great stuff on the website about their mission and values. They are planning on bringing in some gojis and other superfoods and raw foods very soon so stay tuned ;)
